THE CHALLENGE
The sustainability challenge Singapore businesses face
Singapore's largest companies are under growing pressure to decarbonise. Regulators are tightening climate disclosure requirements, investors are scrutinising ESG performance, and multinational customers increasingly require suppliers to demonstrate credible renewable energy procurement.
Yet for most organisations, switching to 100% renewable electricity overnight isn't physically possible — Singapore's grid is still predominantly powered by natural gas, and on-site solar can only offset a fraction of total demand for most commercial and industrial users.
This is the gap Renewable Energy Certificates are designed to close: a verified, internationally recognised mechanism to claim renewable electricity consumption, even when physical green power isn't directly available to your building.
Mandatory climate reporting
is expanding across SGX-listed companies and their supply chains.
Scope 2 emissions
remain one of the hardest categories to address without RECs or on-site generation.
RE100 and CDP
disclosures increasingly expect verifiable renewable electricity claims, not just intent.
THE BASICS
What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?
A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is a tradable, internationally recognised certificate representing proof that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from a renewable source — such as solar, wind, or hydro — and fed into the grid.
When a renewable energy generator produces electricity, it earns one REC for every MWh generated. That REC can then be sold separately from the physical electricity itself. By purchasing and retiring a REC, your organisation can legitimately claim the environmental attributes of that renewable generation — even if the actual electrons powering your building come from the regular grid mix.
RECs are tracked through internationally recognised registries — such as the APX TIGR Registry — which prevents double-counting and ensures every certificate you purchase is unique, verifiable, and retired specifically against your organisation's claim.
✓ 1 REC = 1 MWh of verified renewable electricity generation
✓ Tracked and retired through an internationally recognised registry
✓ Recognised under GHG Protocol Scope 2 guidance
✓ Accepted evidence for RE100, CDP, and many Green Mark submissions
WHY IT MATTERS
How RECs support your ESG and net‑zero goals
Reduce Scope 2 emissions
Apply the market-based method under the GHG Protocol to lower your reported Scope 2 footprint.
Strengthen ESG reporting
Give auditors and stakeholders clear, third-party-verified evidence of renewable procurement.
Support RE100 commitments
Meet annual renewable electricity targets even where direct supply isn't yet feasible.
Back CDP disclosures
Strengthen your CDP Climate Change questionnaire with documented, retired RECs.
Advance Green Mark objectives
Support BCA Green Mark renewable energy criteria for your building or portfolio.
Demonstrate renewable procurement
Show customers and investors a credible, documented commitment to clean energy.
